Buttons

This military button is an example of an item without context. Lack of context means a lack of detailed history. With some research and consultations with an expert, I could probably determine the time period from which this button originated. I might be able to find out where it was made, what garment it might have been worn on, and what war it was present in. However, the location it was found might have been able to provide me with a battlefield or even an individual, which could have helped determine its age and history.

There are many collectors who use metal detectors to find items such as this. Please make some attempt to record information about where items are found. Or better yet, leave the digging up to trained archaeologists.

This is another button without a full history. Once again, some information could be determined with proper research. But having more of the original context would certainly foster some understanding.

In your family packrat's collection, you may find similar items from different time periods. Compare and contrast them to learn more about them. Then compare the older items to similar items you can find today.
